LIQUID
BASED CYTOLOGY'
PREPARED BY MR. ABHIJIT DAS
Introduction:
Liquid-Based Cytology (LBC) is an advanced technique used primarily in cervical cancer screening.
It involves suspending
cells in a liquid preservative, improving sample clarity and accuracy.
Principle:
LBC preserves cells in liquid, reducing debris and artifacts. Cells are
processed to create a thin, even layer on the slide, enhancing visibility and
diagnostic accuracy.
Procedure:
1.
Collect cells and place them in a liquid
preservative.
2.
Use special equipment (ex- centrifuge) to
process and prepare a uniform cell layer on a slide.
3.
Stain and examine under a microscope.
ThinPrep
- Uses
filtration
to spread cells evenly on the slide.
- Effective
at reducing debris and enabling additional tests like HPV.
SurePath
- Uses
centrifugation
to concentrate cells in the center of the slide.
- Also
minimizes background material and allows for tests like HPV.
NOTE
HPV: Human Papillomavirus
HPV are spread through sexual contact
